• Agave thrives in exteme environments. In the Sonoran Desert where I lived for more than 15 years, it is an omnipitant presence, and an emblem of the convergence of the danger, beauty and enduring quality of that landscape. For me, the desert felt oddly remicient of being in the presence of the sea. Looking out over my favorite vistas, I can remember imagining the desert as an ocean floor, its plants lining the seabed. The agave specifically has a kind of cooling, aquatic character, with its undulating blue and green tones and rippled surface. This series offers a visual manifestation of that observation.
